The
vast majority of Canadian POWs were taken at Hong Kong after a hopeless defence
of an indefensible position, along with some 12000 other allied forces. The 1997
prisoners, from the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, were
imprisoned in Hong Kong and later some 1200 were transferred to Japan. During
their time in captivity, 267 (15%) died. See:
