POWs
and internees were held in camps in Singapore, Malaya, Siam (Thailand), Burma
(Myanmar), Formosa (Taiwan), Indo China (Vietnam), Dutch East Indies (Java,
Sumatra, Celebes, Timor, Ambon, etc.), Borneo, Korea, Manchuria, Hong Kong,
Philippines, New Guinea, China and Japan. POWs were transported long distance
in unmarked merchant ships in appalling conditions. Many were sunk by Allied
submarines unaware of their human cargo.
To
illustrate the types of activity, some examples, not exhaustive, follow.
