Sumatra Railway

POWs and 30,000 Indonesians worked on building this railway through swamps and
mountains covered with dense equatorial forest. 220 km long, it was designed to
complete the existing link between Padang-Muaro allowing rapid transfer of
supplies between Pekanbaru and Padang. Finished on 15th August 1945,
it played no part in Japanese actions.
