Although, compared with other nationalities, the number of New Zealand POWs and internees was not large, their treatment mirrored that meted out to others. Figures from the New Zealand Ministry of Culture and Heritage indicate 103 Navy and Merchant Navy, 53 Air Force and Army personnel were taken as POWs while a further 214 civilians (inc. 52 Defence Force Volunteers) were interned. It can be presumed that the mortality rate was similar to that of other Commonwealth forces.
